Complaints for Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma is the standard bearer of Toyota pickups. This time tested beast is very reliable, but complaints about the Tacoma are definitely reported.

Toyota pickups have long carried the reputation of being incredibly reliable. I’ve had personal experiences with this. While I drove a beater Ford pickup that needed repairs constantly, two of my high school buddies had Toyota pickups that ended up running for well over 300,000 miles and they barely changed the oil!

The Toyota Tacoma is the modern version of the classic Toyota pickup. It is a solid truck, but not without some issues. The problems tend to be quality oriented and reflect the drop in perceived quality by Toyota as a whole from 2004 through 2008. The company is fighting hard to regain its edge in this area, but that isn’t much of a help if you own a Tacoma that is falling apart. Let’s take a closer look at some problems.

The 2007 and 2008 Tacoma’s were undoubtedly the most complained about models. The complaints ranged, but one always came to the top. The truck seemed to have a throttle control problem. Drivers reported the truck would accelerate on its own without them pressing down on the gas pedal. As you can imagine, that’s a pretty startling event.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did an investigation to see if there was a defect. The NHTSA did something odd. The agency seemed to suggest there was a problem, but couldn’t identify that it was necessarily a design issue. As a result, the agency ruled that its limited funding kept it from doing a full blown investigation and thus it ruled no defect existed. Put another way, the NHTSA seemed to say yes there is a problem, but we aren’t going to do anything! Yes, your tax dollars at work!

Complaints for the 2007 Toyota Tacoma on another issue, however, did produce a recall. The 4-wheel version of the truck was found to have defective rear propeller shafts. When the shafts failed, they fell to the ground and would literally buck the truck off the ground. Even the NHTSA found this unacceptable and the truck was recalled for a free replacement repair.

The days of the Toyota pickup being an unquestioned model of machinery are sadly over. Complaints for Toyota Tacoma problems occur with every new model these days. In truth, most are pretty minor and the 2009 version has so far not had any issues. Still, Toyota’s reputation has taken a hit and it will have to work hard to repair it.
