The Toyota Tacoma is the modern version of the classic Toyota pickup. It is a solid truck, but not without some issues. The problems tend to be quality oriented and reflect the drop in perceived quality by Toyota as a whole from 2004 through 2008. The company is fighting hard to regain its edge in this area, but that isn’t much of a help if you own a Tacoma that is falling apart. Let’s take a closer look at some problems.
The 2007 and 2008 Tacoma’s were undoubtedly the most complained about models. The complaints ranged, but one always came to the top. The truck seemed to have a throttle control problem. Drivers reported the truck would accelerate on its own without them pressing down on the gas pedal. As you can imagine, that’s a pretty startling event.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did an investigation to see if there was a defect. The NHTSA did something odd. The agency seemed to suggest there was a problem, but couldn’t identify that it was necessarily a design issue. As a result, the agency ruled that its limited funding kept it from doing a full blown investigation and thus it ruled no defect existed. Put another way, the NHTSA seemed to say yes there is a problem, but we aren’t going to do anything! Yes, your tax dollars at work!
