Mini Cooper Extended Maintenance Program

I drive and love my 2008 Mini Cooper S. I definitely give it a workout, which means I need maintenance a lot. This makes the Mini Cooper extended maintenance program of interest.

You brand spanking new Mini Cooper comes with a three year or 36,000 mile warranty, whichever comes first. This policy is a mirror of the one parent company BMW provides to its customers. Most Mini Cooper owners are happy it is there. Why? It covers clutches and brakes. If you aren't going through brake pads and clutches, you really aren't driving your Mini the way God intended!

All good things come to an end, however. In this case, we are talking about the fact the maintenance program ends at the three year/36,000 mile mark. Either measure is pretty early in the life of your Mini. The good news is you can buy the Mini Cooper extended maintenance program through your dealer.

The extended maintenance program does exactly what it says. It pushes the maintenance program out to 6 years and 100,000 miles. The total cost is negotiable, but you can expect to pay a one time fee of $1395 or so. That might seem like a lot, but it actually isn't bad at all. Consider it will cover oil changes every 15,000 miles, which will equate to about 6 of them or $720 [my dealer charges $120 per]. Now throw in the brakes as well. You are going to need at least two brake pad replacements in the 100,000 mile mark. That alone should save you another $800 or so. Just these two charges put you over the cost of the extension.

Is there another approach? Yes, you can take two other paths. One is to simply not buy any maintenance program and pay out of hand. Personally, I don't trust my dealer enough to let them charge me directly! Second, you can try a third party service that will extend your maintenance. Some of the extended warranty program companies offer it as well, so shop around to see what is out there.

Is the Mini Cooper extended maintenance program worth the price? In my case, it is because I definitely give my Mini a workout. Now if I could only find tires that lasted longer!
