Can You Tow Trailers with a Mini Cooper?

The Mini Cooper is a wonder car with great performance that seemingly can do anything. Oh, yeah? Well, can you to trailers with a Mini Cooper?

The short answer to this question is that you can tow trailers with a Mini Cooper. Of course, you can tow a trailer behind a bike you are pedaling as well. In both situations, the question is why would you do this and what damage will it do to the vehicles? We’ll skip the bicycle discussion and go right to the tow abilities of the Mini Cooper.

Your Cooper has a lot of low end torque. This means it can tow trailers in a pinch, but it is really important to keep in mind this is not at all what the car is designed to do. Adding so much weight to a car that has a small engine working hard already is not a good long term plan.

Also, the Mini Cooper is a well balanced car. The problem is it is set up with the vast majority of weight in the front of the car. The stability comes from the wheelbase that is set close the four corners of the car. When you add a weight to the back of the car in the form of a trailer, that balance is shot to heck. The stability of the car under braking in particular becomes very iffy as the backend is put under directional forces never intended by the designers and engineers.

What about a small, light weight trailer? It depends. I would hate to get caught in a cross wind on a freeway with a trailer on the back of my Mini. That being said, I am sure you can do it. I’ve towed cars short distances using a strap pulley system without any problems. This included my father’s Jaguar which is not only a piece of junk, but a heavy one as well!

Can you tow trailers with a Mini Cooper? Yes, but try to restrict it to an emergency situation. If you are going camping or a long distance, rent a truck that is designed to move loads instead of a little car with gear rations that simply are not intended for such weight movement.
