A number of questions start coming to mind. Is there something wrong with your Mini Cooper? Is the soot a sign the engine is burning oil or running incorrectly? Is an imminent failure about to happen? AHHH, did I kill my Mini?!! Frankly, you can get pretty worked up and worried about it.
The first thing to do is take a deep breath. There is nothing wrong with your Mini unless there is smoke belching out the back of the car. Why then do the exhaust pipes look so dirty and grungy? That, my friend, is the price of performance. When you punch the gas pedal, you induce more forced air and gasoline into the engine. It causes the engine to burn rich and produce more exhaust. That is what you are seeing.
Exhaust smoke is very misunderstood. Generally, black smoke only means a lot of gasoline is being burned by the engine. It does not mean that there is something wrong. When an engine has problems, it tends to produce white or blue smoke. If you see these colors coming from your Mini, it’s time for an adult beverage and a long look at your savings because something major has broken in the engine and it is going to cost a pretty penny to repair.
