The story is well known by now. The original Hummer was a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle made for the military by the AM General Corporation. The long name was shortened to “Hum-Vee” by military types. The vehicle became a cult classic in the 1980s and 1990s when private parties started buying them and converting them to civilian purposes. AM General saw a good thing and began producing a modern version under the name Hummer in 1992. When GM ran into trouble, so did Hummer. It was supposed to be discontinued, but the sale to a Chinese company was announced to save the brand. In June 2009, however, the Chinese government announced it would block the purchase.
