BMW Paint Chipping Problems

BMW’s are great cars, but every car has its issues. BMW paint chipping problems are one of the issues that can drive owners absolutely nuts.

What is BMW known for? Engineering. The cars are a blast to drive. That being said, many of the models are only updated every so often. The joke in the auto industry has long been it would be great to have a car with the beauty of the old Jaguar designs and the solid engineering and reliability of a BMW. Many think this is why the Mini Cooper is so popular.

One area where BMW has often been marked down is the exterior of the car. Some people find the models to be boxy and boring. You might agree. You might not. It is really a matter of taste. The one area, however, where BMW owners will gripe endlessly is the chipping of the paint.

The front of a BMW presents a nearly flat surface to the road. As the car moves forward, this surface takes an absolute beating. Every bit of debris on the road seems to fly up and slam into the front of the car. This results in paint chips. Every car runs into this problem, but we are not talking about a chip or two. We are talking about hundreds of them. I had a Z3 that looked like the front had been shot by a pellet gun.

You can try to stay on top of the problem with touch up paint, but it is nearly impossible to be that diligent. Most people, myself included, end up getting the front repainted every so often. Your insurance will some times cover it, but more often will not. A newer option is a clear film that independent companies are producing for the BMW paint chip problem. The film comes in the shape of the front of your particular model. It has adhesive on one side. You then apply it to the front and it creates a protective barrier. It isn’t perfect, but it is much better than having nothing.

BMW paint chipping problems are legendary. If you are considering picking up a BMW, make sure to check out the protective film cover option. You’ll be glad you did when a couple years pass and the front of your Beemer still looks great.
