BMW Extended Warranty
BMW offers tremendous warranty and maintenance service packages. The question many owners face is whether to buy a BMW extended warranty after the initial packages expire.
One of the things I have always loved about my BMWs is the fact maintenance and repairs are taken car of for the first four years. Isn’t that the way it should be with a new car? The question many of us Beemer owners face, however, is what to do when the initial warranty and maintenance packages wear out. Specifically, should we buy a BMW extended warranty package?

Ready to be surprised? Generally, extended warranty plans are not a good deal across the auto industry. Why? Well, they can be expensive and repairs often cost less than you will pay in the long run. The BMW extended warranty program is offered through the dealers themselves. The prices are flexible, but you can expect to pay between $1,500 and $2,000 for it. That’s not exactly cheap.
Still, does an extended warranty make sense for your BMW? Well, it generally does make sense. Why? There are two reasons. First, BMWs are solid cars. They rarely suffer breakdowns. That being said, when the do breakdown it tends to be something pretty serious. Serious tends to mean expensive. As you might have noticed, the prices charged at your local BMW dealership for repairs are a tad high. Given this, you can view purchasing the extended warranty for your Beemer as a sort of catastrophic failure insurance.

There is another way to gauge the value of buying a BMW extended warranty. Consider the repairs your car has needed. Then hop online and compare them to histories of your model of car. Have there been recalls? Have technical service bulletins [“TSB”] been issued. If so, give them a read. Try to gauge the potential problems you might experience in the future and what it will cost to fix them. Only then can you determine if the extended warranty makes financial sense.
I own a BMW extended warranty. Why? I’m happy with the work done by my dealer and I just prefer not to have to deal with any problems that pop up. I have a busy life, so having one less thing to worry about just makes sense for me.
